Jersey Royals, the food of gods.
Sweet potatoes and petit pois are good contenders.

It was the talk of mayo and horseradish and sour cream that did it.

You are like my wife. Sent her a picture of Christmas cake from the store to show her how expensive I thought it was. All I got back was a vomiting emoji.

Try easing into, put it in chocolate cake or brownies, keeps them from drying out without adding more fat.

I second the Beetroot. Incredibly good for you. Not only full of vitamins and stuff that creates endorphins. Great in a Cypriot salad with black olives and dressing.

Can be used in deserts such as ice cream and as a natural food colouring. Can a potatoes do that? Non

It wins.

Nurse

I was put off by beetroot as well, mainly because pickled beetroot is the norm here and has limited uses.

Once I discovered raw beetroot dishes and borscht, I was converted. It does turn your piss purple though.

Raw shredded beetroot, garlic and horseradish mixed with a teaspoon of mayo and soured cream is awesome as a salad.

Re: What is the best go-to vegetable ever?
Beetroots are superb. Pickled, roasted...yellow, paintballing (Hiya!)

That's just FACT

I have stopped stockpiling lettuce in favour of the humble ROOT vegetable. Christmas will involve turnips. For Queen and Country.

Right now, cauliflower, because they are all stuck in Calais and going off.

The smell is not ONLY vinegar. I can guarantee I have a keener sense of smell than you.

Re: What is the best go-to vegetable ever?
The smell is the vinegar. The look is alarming, but certainly not revolting.

Try it in a lamb curry. Or add it to hummus to get an almost luminescent red (must be raw, though and not cooked, otherwise you'll just get a dull pink colour).

Re: What is the best go-to vegetable ever?
The nearest thing to beetroot I have eaten is beetroot cured smoked salmon and that is delicious. Otherwise, no. I might have been put off by the appearance of pickled beetroot in a jar. Revolting look and smell.

Curiosity question.

How long have you be aware of heritage beetroot etc? Golden beets and the like are are 10/15 years old in my awareness. (I know they are older obviously)

The candy cane ones look great in salads and taste good too.

It can be a briefly scary surprise the morning after, if you eat a lot and forget you did.

You've never had beetroot?

Nurse Ratched 12:31 Tue Dec 22

I've not been able to bring myself to try beetroot. The colour alarms me.

Re: What is the best go-to vegetable ever?
Beetroot being a going concern in England is one of the great things about living here.

I thing it has probably changed a bit in North America during the culinary/gardening revival of the last 15 /20 years but I think I probably had about a ten year accidental break from it after I left home.

Very fond kid memories of summer lunches of pickled beets, devilled eggs and canned tomatoes.

I’m having bubble with carrots in it this morning, not sure if that’s right, but I’m past caring anymore.

Re: What is the best go-to vegetable ever?
Due to a surplus of roasted vegetables (already!), I shall be concocting a honey/soy PARSNIP omelette for lunch.

I will report, it is a first. I am optimistic... but, then, I am a West Ham fan. I wouldn't trust Moyes with this one...

Re: What is the best go-to vegetable ever?
Has to be onion, leek or beetroot
